Using a Linux Server in Your Business

Linux is a mature operating system with all the bells and whistles of Microsoft Windows. It’s stable, cheap and effective. However, there are several things you should consider when thinking about going for a Linux server.

Depending on your goals, a Linux server may not be the best fit. Linux, being much different than Windows, is primarly command line driven which makes the learning curve steep. Generally, a traditional Windows administrator cannot easily learn how Linux works. As a result, if you are going to outsource Linux administration or support, there are generally less companies that support it. The same is true if you are looking for internal staff. There are plenty of trained Windows administrators, but good Linux administrators are hard to find. Especially on the east coast.

We have walked into companies that lost their in-house administrator, and some of these environments were a real mess. Luckily we have the expertice to take over. Although, some companies have a really hard time trying to pick up the pieces of a custom Linux environment when their administrator in no longer in the picture. Without documentation of highly customzied systems can be almost impossible to work with.

If you really want to go with Linux, make sure you have the proper documentation in place. This helps dramatically when the next person or company steps in to take over. Call Orlando Tech Works for Linux administration.
